The Packing Mistakes That Made My Move Way Harder
You can Google all the moving checklists in the world — and still somehow end up sobbing on the floor of your new apartment because you forgot a shower curtain.
When I moved across the country, I thought I had it all figured out. I made lists, packed early, even bought cute little labels. And yet… some of the most basic things didn’t make it into the boxes. Meanwhile, I wasted precious space on stuff I haven’t used once.
So here it is: the real list I wish someone had given me. Not the “aspirational” list full of perfectly rolled sweaters and color-coded bins. Just the truth.
Things I’m So Glad I Packed
🧰 1. A Real Tool Kit
Not a tiny screwdriver or a plastic IKEA wrench. A legit kit. Between broken furniture, tight screws, and random nails sticking out of the wall, this saved my sanity.
🛏️ 2. My Favorite Blanket
It smelled like my old bed and felt like home. When you’re surrounded by boxes and sleeping on the floor, one soft, familiar thing hits different.
🔌 3. Extension Cords & Power Strips
There are never enough outlets, especially in older apartments. And of course, your phone charger never reaches the bed.
🌬️ 4. A Mini Fan
Even if you think your new place has A/C — spoiler alert: it might not work. This little guy saved me during summer unpacking.
🎒 5. My Everyday Backpack
This became my personal carry-on, emergency kit, and purse all in one. One solid bag with all your essentials = way less stress.
Things I Forgot and Regretted Instantly
🚑 1. A First-Aid Kit
I sliced my hand open with a box cutter on Day 1 and had nothing but a paper towel and hope. Don’t be like me.
🚽 2. A Plunger
You don’t need one… until you do. Enough said.
🗑️ 3. Trash Bags
You’ll need them for packing paper, broken boxes, delivery containers — and emotions.
🚿 4. A Shower Curtain
I really thought I could just run to the store. But when you’re sweaty, gross, and stores are closed? You’re suddenly real mad at yourself.
🧽 5. Basic Cleaning Supplies
No matter how “clean” the new place is, there’s always dust, weird corners, and floors that need scrubbing. Pack wipes, paper towels, dish soap, and a sponge at minimum.
What I Should’ve Left Behind
📚 1. My Entire Book Collection
They were heavy, took up two boxes, and are now sitting untouched on a shelf. Romantic? Yes. Realistic? No.
🍹 2. That “Someday” Blender
If you didn’t use it once in the past year, you won’t suddenly become a smoothie person post-move. Trust me.
👠 3. Too Many Shoes
I brought twelve pairs. I wear three. The rest live in a bin under my bed. R.I.P. space.
🧂 4. Old Pantry Items & Expired Spices
I know moving is emotional. But that chili powder from 2017 didn’t need to come with me. Pack light. Your new pantry deserves a fresh start.
🍴 5. Random Kitchen Gadgets
I’m looking at you, panini press. You’ve done nothing but sit quietly in my cabinet for months.
Final Thoughts: Label Like Your Life Depends on It
You’re not labeling for “right now you.” You’re labeling for the version of you that’s exhausted, emotionally fragile, and just wants a towel.
Here’s how I’d label things if I could do it again:
- “Open This First” → towels, toiletries, coffee, chargers, clean clothes.
- “Only Open If You’re Nesting” → wall art, books, candles.
- “Open If You Want to Scream” → cords you’ll never identify, random desk items, mismatched mugs.
